Traffic Challenges and Solutions in Naples

Traffic congestion in Naples has reached a critical point. Residents and visitors alike are experiencing longer commute times, increased frustration, and reduced safety on our roads. Seasonal population surges, rapid development, and aging infrastructure have all contributed to what many now call a traffic crisis.

What’s Being Done:

The City of Naples and Collier County have initiated several major infrastructure projects to address these challenges:

• I-75 Widening Project: A $578 million initiative to expand I-75 from six to eight lanes across 18.5 miles in Naples and Fort Myers. This project includes improved interchanges, bridges, and eco-friendly noise barriers, aiming to reduce congestion and improve safety.
• Airport Road Widening: A six-lane urban roadway redesign between Vanderbilt Beach Road and Immokalee Road, with sidewalks, medians, lighting, and stormwater systems. Construction is expected to begin in Fall 2026.
• SR 951 Flyover Project: A $97 million FDOT project adding an elevated ramp at the I-75/SR 951 interchange to ease bottlenecks. Completion is expected by Summer 2026.
• 8th Street Complete Street Project: Downtown Naples has seen a transformation with multimodal improvements including bike lanes, roundabouts, and pedestrian-friendly design.
• Long-Term Planning: The Naples 2045 Comprehensive Plan and the Collier County 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan are guiding future development with a focus on mobility, sustainability, and community input.

What Still Needs to Be Done:

Despite these efforts, more work remains:

• Mass Transit Solutions: Naples lacks robust public transportation options. Expanding bus routes, exploring ferry systems, and investing in regional transit could reduce car dependency.
• Smart Growth Policies: Development must be balanced with infrastructure capacity. We need leaders who will prioritize traffic impact assessments and enforce responsible growth strategies.
• Community Engagement: Residents deserve a voice in shaping transportation priorities. Transparent planning and inclusive public forums must be the norm, not the exception.
• Funding and Coordination: Continued collaboration between city, county, and state agencies is essential to secure funding and align transportation goals.
